My top five definitely includes Ursula Le Guin (although, she’s not exactly hard science fiction).
I tend to enjoy single works of authors more than their corpus. For example, a few Silverberg novels are amazing and the rest is crud. The same thing goes for John Brunner — his Stand on Zanzibar (1969) is my favorite science fiction novel despite the rather banal level of the most his works…
